You can carry 2 pieces of luggage, up to 85 cm long, plus one small hand luggage. BUSINESS PREMIER: a third piece of luggage (up to 85 cm long) can be carried for free.

IC (InterCity)

No restrictions, you can take as much as you can carry!

Thello

Allowed are 2 standard size suitcases measuring less than 160cm/ 63 inch (height + length + width), and one piece of hand luggage. Up to 2 extra pieces of luggage can be taken, this however is subject to available space on board. The fee is 40 € per piece. Each piece of luggage must be labeled with the passenger's name.

 

Italo

Passengers can take as much as they can carry, but are advised to keep in mind that the space on the train is limited, and to store the luggage in the allotted space. There are padlocks available in certain parts of the train.

All passengers carrying valid tickets may bring along 3 pieces of luggage, which must remain under your supervision and responsibility, and in the designated areas. The sum of the dimensions of the three items may not exceed 290 cm, and the largest of the three may not exceed the following dimensions: 85 x 55 x 35 cm (height-width-depth). The total weight of the three may not exceed 25 kg.

Standard: Suitcases, hand luggage, backpacks, briefcases for laptops and similar.

United Kingdom

 

Passengers are permitted to take up to three items of luggage free of charge. This includes a maximum of two large items of luggage per traveller, such as a suitcase or backpack. Additional items of luggage and larger items may incur a charge. To arrange the transport of additional or larger items of luggage, the train operating company must be contacted directly.

Many travel providers across Europe offer discount cards which allow travellers to secure reduced fares on their chosen routes. In general, discount cards are intended for frequent travellers and are in some cases restricted to residents of the country where the journey is taking place. Discount cards often cost money to obtain and are therefore unlikely to be worth purchasing unless you are making regular trips. To find out more please refer to the operator.

Children under 4 travel free, but must sit on an accompanying adult's lap. If you wish to reserve him or her a seat, you must purchase a youth fare ticket.

Children ages 4-11 are eligible for a youth fare ticket.

IC (InterCity)

Children under 6 travel free, but do not get their own seat. If you wish to reserve him or her a seat, you must purchase a youth fare ticket.

Children ages 6-11 are eligible for a youth fare ticket.

TGV - TER - TGV Lyria

Children under 4 travel free, but must sit on an accompanying adult's lap. If you wish to reserve him or her a seat, you must purchase a youth fare ticket.

INTERCITÉS

Children under 4 travel free.  You can book a seat for your child under 4. It costs only €9 and is valid for one entire leg of your journey, regardless of train type and travel class.

Children under 6 travel free, and do not need to be stated on the ticket.

Children 6-14 travel free when accompanied by a parent or grandparent, and must be stated on the ticket. When accompanied by someone else or traveling alone, they must be stated on the ticket and pay half-price.

Children 15 and up always pay full price.

Children under 4 travel free, children under 15 eligible for youth rate at 50% of base fare. Please note that sometimes an adult super-economy or economy ticket might be cheaper.

Regional train

Children under 4 travel free, children under 12 are eligible for a youth fare ticket.

Thello

Children under 4 travel free, and do not need to be stated on the ticket, but must share a couchette with an accompanying adult.

Children 4 through 14 are eligible for a youth fare, and require their own ticket and couchette.

Italo

Infants younger than 30 months can travel for free on an accompanying adult's lap. If one adult travels with more than one infant, only the first will travel for free, while a ticket will need to be purchased for the others.

Children older than that are eligible for a youth fare ticket up until 13 years of age and are obligated to get their own ticket.

  • Italo Family:  Children under 14 can travel for free with the Family ticket. This applies to groups of minimum 2 and maximum 4 people, with at least 1 passenger over 18 years of age. Infants are not counted in the total, as they do not have a reserved seat. This ticket cannot be modified or refunded. 
  • Italo Junior Service:  Children between 7 and 13 can travel without an adult in the Club Executive carriage with a Flex or an Economy fare, plus the assistance fee (€ 30-60 depending on travel distance). The children will have to carry ID and Italo train staff will ensure that the child be escorted to the parent upon arrival. The service can be booked up to 7 days prior to the departure only by calling Pronto Italo Contact Center at +39 06 89371892.

 Thalys: Small dogs and other domestic pets can travel free of charge if their carrier is not bigger than 55x30x30 cm and as long as you prevent them from disturbing other passengers. Dogs not carried in a bag or container will have to travel with a "dog" fare ticket and remain on your lap.

Eurostar: Small dogs and pets are not allowed on Eurostar trains, at the exception of guide dogs (please see conditions here).

ICE: Cats and small dogs carried in a basket or cage can travel free of charge within Belgium, and at 50% of the adult fare on other networks.IC:

Your four legged-friend is welcome, under the following conditions: if you’re bringing your pet along, remember to book his ticket when you book your own. You can travel with up to two dogs or two containers per person on all SNCF trains except Eurostar.

If your dog or other pet weighs less than 6 kg:

  • they must travel in a bag or basket no larger than 45 cm x 30 cm x 25 cm
  • the fare is €7 per pet on TGV, Intercités and TER trains.

If your dog or other pet weighs more than 6 kg:

  • they must wear a muzzle during the entire journey
  • their fare will be 50% of the full 2nd class fare (even if you travel in 1st class) on TGV, Intercités and TER trains
  • pet-specific fares are available on other types of trains.

Pets are welcome and may board free of charge, as long as they fit into a transport case (i.e. they are no larger than the average house cat). They must remain in the transport case for the duration of the train ride. 

If the pet cannot fit in a transport case, it must be on a leash and wear a muzzle, and it requires a half-price ticket. These half-price tickets cannot be issued online; they must be purchased at a Deutsche Bahn travel center or directly at the station. Seeing eye dogs and other assistance dogs are not required to wear muzzles.  

Italy

Your pet is welcome, under the following conditions:

  • small pets must be kept in the appropriate container no larger than 70x30x50cm (inches??) and are admitted free of charge.

Each passenger can bring only one container.

  • Dogs of any size, kept on a leash and muzzled, are admitted on board of the following trains with these conditions:
  • IC and Freccia trains: in first and second class, and in Business and Standard class, by purchasing a ticket 50% of the full 2nd class fare at any Trenitalia ticket office. Purchased on site.

Animals are not allowed in Executive and Premium class, in sleeping cars, couchette cars, and Restaurant/Bar wagons*.

  • Regional trains: in the vestibule of the last wagon of any regional trains, except for trains running from 7 am to 9 am between Mondays and Fridays (rush hour)*. The fare is 50% of the full 2nd class fare, and tickets can be purchased at any Trenitalia ticket office.
  • Thello train: if the pet weighs less than 5kg, it travels for free in the appropriate container which then is considered as a piece of luggage (please, see Luggage Restrictions above).

If the pet weighs between 5 and 50 kg, it is allowed on board under the following conditions:

  • A cabin needs to be booked for your exclusive use. (If you are traveling alone, you have to book a single cabin.) Maximum one dog per cabin.
  • The fee is € 50 to the crew exclusively on board (by credit card or in cash).
  • The dog should always be leashed and muzzled when leaving the cabin, boarding and unboarding the train.

Before traveling with a large dog, it is strongly recommended to inform Thello by means of the contact form that you find on Thello website.


*This does not apply to guide dogs for the visually impaired.

For the transportation of dogs of any breed and size, a dog registration certificate will be required.
  • Animals under 10kg

All pets weighing under 10 kilograms can travel free of charge and must be kept in an appropriate container, in the luggage spaces or next to the seat. Each passenger can bring only one container.

  • Dogs over 10 kilograms

Large dogs are allowed on board by paying an extra fee of 50€ and only if the owner booked aFlex fare for Comfort, Smart or Prima ambiance. The dog needs to be kept on a leash and wear a muzzle when getting on and off the train, and if requested by the NTV staff. It is necessary to book the service at least 2 hours prior departure by calling Italo Contact Center at 060708.

These regulations do not apply to guide dogs for the visually impaired

Transportation of pets is limited to small animals like: dogs, cats, ferrets, and birds (not poultry). Not exceeding 10kg in weight. Your pet should have a valid health and sanitary documentation under the current legislation. 

One pet per passenger, provided that there is a cage, carrier or closed container with dimensions not exceeding 60x35x35 cm. 

Fees may apply on AVE and other long distance trains.

Of course, guide dogs can travel on any train for free.

United Kingdom

 Passengers are permitted to take up to two dogs, cats or other small animals free of charge. Dogs must be kept on a lead or carried in a basket, a basket is mandatory for cats and other small animals. If a basket, cage or pet carrier (max. 85x60x60cm) is used, it must be secure so that the animal cannot escape and it must be large enough to provide enough space for the animal to stand up and travel comfortably. If an animal is taking up a seat intended for passenger use then you may be charged.

SNCF's lost and found procedure requires you to file a report at the nearest SNCF station equipped with a lost and found service.To find a station with a lost and found service, go to www.gares-sncf.com (available in French only), select a train station from the list, then click on "Services" and then click the "Services aux voyageurs" section to find the "Objets Trouvés" (lost and found).

Germany

For missing items on routes operated by Deutsche Bahn, you can file a lost and found report at the train station. You have four weeks following the date of travel to file this report. Additionally there is an online form available that will be forwarded directly into the Deutsche Bahn lost and found database.

Frecce (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca)

If you leave your train and immediately realise that you are missing an item, there is a search service available which can be requested at the Customer Service office within the following stations: · Torino Porta Nuova · Milano Centrale · Venezia Santa Lucia · Bologna Centrale · Firenze Santa Maria Novella · Roma Termini · Napoli Centrale · Reggio Calabria Centrale

If your item is found, the Customer Service office will contact you to arrange a time and place for collection. Should the attempts of the office staff to contact you fail, the item will be taken to the local authority's office (Ufficio del Comune). In the event that your realise you are missing an item a significant amount of time after arriving at the station, then it is likely your item will have already been transported to the local authority's office (Ufficio del Comune). In such a case, you will need to contact the local authority’s office directly. You can find the telephone number for the relevant local authority office on the website of the train station you arrived at.

Regional trains

If you are a missing an item and you were travelling on a Regional train, then you are required to contact the relevant local authority’s office "Ufficio del Comune" directly. You can find the telephone number for the relevant local authority office on the website of the train station you arrived at.

All bicycles must be folded. If your bike cannot be folded, you will have to remove the front wheel and carry it in the bag not exceeding 120 x 90 cm.

Eurostar

Any folded bike smaller than 85 cm can be taken in any Eurostar train. If the dimensions exceed 85 cm, bicycles will have to travel with the provider's registered luggage service, Eurodespatch.  

IC (InterCity)

Bicycles can only be carried in IC trains with a luggage compartment between Belgium and the Netherlands and in IR trains between Liège and Aachen.  The fee for this is € 12.

France

TGV

You can take your bike in a bike bag free of charge, so long as it is no bigger than 120 x 90cm. Some TGV trains have special storage spaces for fully assembled bikes.You must book your bike space at the same time as your train ticket.  Please note that this can not be done online.  

INTERCITÉS

You can take your bike for free on trains without a reservation. However, there are only 20 places available per train. On Intercités trains with compulsory reservation you must buy a € 10 ticket for your bike at the same time as your regular ticket.  Please note that this can not be done online.  

TER

Bicycles are welcome on TER regional train. You can take your bike with you without paying any extra charge. These are limited, and you can not book in advance, so arrive on time! On certain routes you cannot take a bike.

TGV Lyria

You can take your bike in a bike bag free of charge, as long as it is no bigger than 120 x 90cm.  Alternatively,  you can reserve a place for your assembled bike for € 10 in the dedicated bike room at any SNCF or CFF point of sale. Please note that this can not be done online. 

Germany

ICE and IC (InterCity)

Bikes are not permitted on the ICE trains. Bicycles can only be carried in IC trains with a luggage compartment.  In IC trains as well as night trains it is necessary to make a reservation for your bicycle prior to travelling.  More information on how to book your bike on intercity trains can be found here.  

Please note that an international bicycle ticket is required if you intend to cross any borders. 

Regional trains

Bicycles can be taken in all regional trains (RE and RB) as long as you have a ticket for your bicycles.

Bikes carried in an appropriate bag are free of charge. The bike must be fully disassembled.

Regional trains

Bicycles carried in an appropriate bag are free of charge. Some regional trains have storage spaces for fully assembled bikes. A ticket can be bought directly at the station. It costs € 3.50 and must be validated before boarding the train, then it is valid for 24 hours.

Thello

Bikes carried in an appropriate bag are free of charge. In this case, it is considered as a piece of luggage and forms part of the luggage allowances as mentioned above. Bike cases bigger than 160cm are strictly forbidden on board. The bike cannot be taken fully assembled.

International Trains

Bicycles carried in an appropriate bag are free of charge. Some trains have storage spaces for fully assembled bikes. The price of a bike ticket € 12 and can be bought at the station. 

 

Italo

Bikes need to be dismounted/folded and carried in an appropriate container. They can be stored in the luggage compartment free of charge.

 

 

Netherlands

Renfe

To transport bicycles on the train, they must be folded or dismantled and packed with dimensions not exceeding 120 x 90 x 40 cm. The pedals must be removed and the handlebars turned 90º.  

In sleeping compartments (beds, sleeper seats or bunks) only two bikes can be carried per compartment.  In this case, bicycles are transported free of charge with the corresponding bike ticket (to be arranged with Renfe directly).

On normal Medium Distance Trains

Bicycles do not need to be packed, though please note that there is a limit of two bicycles per train. The cost of transporting a bicycle is € 3 per journey exceeding 100 km;  for any shorter journey there is no charge.

On Commuter Trains

On commuter trains there is a limit of one bicycle per passenger.  The traveller must possess a valid ticket, as there is no charge for this service.  If the train is crowded and the bike cannot be boarded, the passenger may take the next train or request a refund.  Bicycles must be transported in the intended compartments.  Catalonia Commuter trains are determined by the local authority and these conditions may not apply.

United Kingdom

Trains have a limited capacity to carry bicycles and consequently your ability to bring a bicycle is subject to storage availability. Additionally, on certain routes and at certain peak times bringing a bicycle is restricted. Some rail companies allow customers to reserve a space for their bicycles and - due to high demand - it is recommended to do this is early as possible. To reserve a ticket for your bicycle or to find out about peak times and restricted routes contact the train operator directly or go to your local station. 

 

While a strike might be announced a few days prior departure, we unfortunately do not have any way to know if a specific train will be impacted by a delay or a cancellation. Most of the time, you will be able to obtain more information directly at the station. 

Should you be informed that the train was or will be cancelled, and if you purchased your ticket through GoEuro, please contact us to confirm that you are entitled to a partial or full refund.

Please note that some providers, such as Renfe, only provide us with a list of the impacted trains after the scheduled departure.
